Inquiry-Based Instruction...
The Inquiry-based Instruction Design™ process strengthens teaching and learning,
allowing students to delve deeper into content area material while addressing real
world problems. Through the IID™ process teachers learn to;
(1) identify critical content, concepts and essential understandings central to
the unit topic,
(2) create an opening lesson that engages learners with relevant real-world problems,
(3) use “big ideas” and essential questions to structure learning,
(4) use technology and leveled reading text materials to access, organize, analyze,
and report information,
(5) create a learning environment that values student decision-making and points
of view, and
(6) embed reading strategies to improve reading comprehension.
At the end of the two to three day series of work sessions, teachers walk away with
a comprehensively designed unit for engaging students in their learning. Research
has shown academic growth in students having experienced three or more such units
in a school year.
